Yeah so do i. and the gears must be very tricky to make them and then place them correctly

It's a lot of math. You end up with having to calculate several tooth sweeps because gear teeth are cycloid and for something that isn't round, you have to calculate several teeth because the contact circle changes radius as the gear rotates.

The centers are dictated by an average contact circle. Contact circle is where the two gears actually touch. This is what dictates gear ratio on a round gear. On round gears, all of the teeth have the same profile since meshing properly is essentially no-slip contact at the contact face of the gear. Tooth count is simply a convenient method for contacting ratio because the math works out.
